THE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS EXAM (ADVANCED) – RCE(A)
The days when it was necessary to pass the RAE, now called the RCE(A), to gain access to the HF bands have long gone. Consequently, much of the motivation for further study has been removed. However, the rewards of personal achievement in gaining a pass should not be underestimated.
The Intermediate Licence Course gives the first real introduction to electronic/radio theory and importantly into practical construction of circuits. This interesting and useful course is highly recommended to all holders of a Foundation Licence, even if you do not intend doing the RCE(A).
Since no practical assessments are required for the RCE(A), the RSGB suggest that it is ideally suited to home study using their Course Handbook, which follows the syllabus exactly, so is required reading. Plenty of additional resources are available via the Internet, e.g. "BRATS Club", "Hamtest" and the PW "2008 Callbook" CD-ROM has a well-presented course.
The RCE(A) is not difficult but does need commitment, and I know that trying to self-learn can be challenging, consequently most students appreciate the help and advice of a tutor. It is recognised that students at this stage will have varying degrees of knowledge and experience, so we will try to adopt a flexible approach best suited to the student’s needs. For example, only tutorials on "difficult" topics may be required by some students. Most importantly, the learning experience should be pleasurable, so, if you are thinking of "having a go", contact me, Rob Jones GW4FCV (details in RSGB Yearbook) or via the Exam Secretary, Andrew Powell MW0LAO, e-mail: andrewactros@aol.com
Tuition is provided free but is subject to Club membership, fees currently £14 per annum. Examination Fees are also applicable, levied by the RSGB, please refer to their website for up to date information on their charges.
General information about the club, opening times, location etc. appears elsewhere on this Website.
